Alfred L. Carter Ph.D.

Fred Carter, B.Sc., M.Sc. 1954, Dalhousie University, Halifax NS, Ph.D. Physics, 1958, (McGill University, Montreal), is now retired from Carleton University where he taught and worked in experimental particle physics for 30 years.

He was a visiting scientist at the Nuclear Physics Laboratory, Oxford University, England in 1972/3 and at the TRIUMF Laboratory at the University of British Columbia in 1980/1. One of his main interests has been the utilization of mini-computers in experimental physics.

He became interested in the physics of blood spatter analysis in 1982 when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police approached Carleton University for assistance in the teaching of physics and mathematics as it applies to the blood spatter analysis of crime scenes. In 1989 he created the BackTrack® computer program for bloodstain pattern analysis and the program Tracks which uses the laws of physics to study and simulate bloodstain patterns.

In 1991 he and his son Brian created Forensic Computing of Ottawa Inc to market the software found at this site.

In 1992 he developed a new procedure for blood spatter analysis that uses computers and digital imaging technology and created the two programs BackTrack/Win and BackTrack/Images.

At the 1999 annual training conference in Houston TX, of the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts (IABPA) he was honored by the award of  Distinguished Member.
